Dinesh Gunawardene has become the new Prime Minister of Sri Lanka. President Ranil Wickremesinghe appointed him as the Prime Minister. Gunawardene, 73, was made Home Minister in April, during the tenure of former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. He has also served as Foreign Minister and Education Minister.
The post of Prime Minister fell vacant after Wickremesinghe became the President. Wickremesinghe, a six-time prime minister, was sworn in as the country’s 8th President on Thursday. Gunawardene has been a classmate of Ranil Wickremesinghe. Now both of them have the burden of getting Sri Lanka out of the economic crisis.
Who is Dinesh Gunawardene
Dinesh Gunawardene was born in 1949. He went to the Netherlands for higher education.
Gunawardene reached Parliament in 1983 after winning from Maharagama, a suburb of Colombo.
Played the role of a prominent opposition leader till 1994.
The condition of the country is not improving
Professor MG Tharaka of Galle Face Colombo says that during the last three months, the leaders involved in the government have made claims towards many things to improve the situation, but the ground situation has not improved. Now people have no faith in the Rajapaksa family and any leader they have installed. Protesters believe the Rajapaksa family wants to shield themselves from charges by placing Ranil Wickremesinghe as the presidency of Sri Lanka.
Former PM Mahinda seen for the first time after two months
Former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa appeared in the House for the first time in two months during voting for the new President. Mahinda was in a secret hideout for so long. After former President Gotabaya fled to Singapore, there were speculations that Mahinda might also flee from Sri Lanka. Chamal and Namal of the Rajapaksa family also reached Parliament to vote.
